Clutch mechanism failure (Again!)

Hi Bighair,

The bush will not stand a heavy interference fit, especially with the relatively large hole in the side of it.

I think I ended up about .02 under the nominal diameter of the bush.

When you are getting close, try to insert the bush slightly and see how it feels - easy does it once you are getting close.

The surface roughness of the machining will be a factor too, the cover is soft so can be honed out slightly if needs be.

The bush I used was a split type, so that had an effect on the fit too.

this gave a nice snug fit, plastic mallet to fit it and it's not going to fall out.

Thanks for the info on final fit . I might stake punch it , just in case. i will see what the fit is like.

Yamfan Was your measurement metric (=7 thou) ??

Hi Yamfan.

I just noticed that you based in Irelend, my as well :)
Im thinking about preventing this clutch issue so..... it is possible that you might be able to help me to avoid paying 170e to Joe Duffy garage :)
Thx

@ Bighair,

Yep all metric, But my measurements could be hit and miss so machine to suit you bushing.

@ Zadaleko

Sorry but I am in the middle of a building project at the moment and am up to my eyes in cement dust and soggy timber.

hi there,

same problem here with my 07 G650X Challenge, lost 1 tooth from cover operating shaft and 1 tooth from the release bearing. The lost tooth from the cover shaft I was able recover, but I couldn't find the lost tooth from the release bearing (picture below).

Do you guys think this lost tooth is a problem for the engine? I'm going to do an oil change before starting the engine again but I'm not sure I will find this small piece of metal in it.

Howdy,

Thats some bad news.

I think you really need to find that missing tooth.
It could end up between two gears and lock the back wheel.
I would check the magnetic sump plug and also in the clutch pack.
Perhaps a flexi magnet might be able to fish it out?

Don't just replace the rack and pinion without replacing or repairing the cover, or the same thing will happen again.
Best of luck with it!

I understand that BMW are aware of the problem, but have they done a recall for it?
