EWS RECALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just had a 6000 mile service on my 07 1200GS, and the EWS, brake line and engine management updates were done at the same time. I overheard the dealer's service receptionist tell a customer that they were getting ring antennae failures at the rate of 3 or 4 a day!

As a matter of interest, I hadn't had any communication from the dealer who supplied the bike about the ring antennae replacement, but was advised it would be done when I dropped the bike off.

ANOTHER FAILURE

277 miles since new on my 1200GS, stopped to refuel and got the amber triangle and EWS message. Very disappointing, however top marks to Pete and Matthew from my dealer, Wollaston BMW who put me in touch with recovery and immediately offered to prep a replacement bike for the weekend. Got picked up by Eddie from CSG Recovery out of P'boro who took great care of me and the bike, got me home and the bike to the workshop. Wollaston's repaired it quickly and I'm now back on the road and smiling again. So I'm pleased with the after sales support but its a pity I had to put it to the test.

Its a great bike, I just hope it lives up to my expectations of reliability. Its my 3rd BM but 1st brand new one; my 1150RT and K1200R never had a problem. For a company that trades on its reputation for quality and reliability, and charges accordingly, they ought to get it right.

Yep - according to the dealer that the bike has been relayed to, there is no recall on this part and I shouldn't believe what I read on the internet! Bike is going to be off the road for a week as the workshop is fully booked.

I have had no notification of a recall from BM and the bike had it's first service about 6 weeks ago so surely they would have done any recall work at that time...

They're being less than helpful mate - there IS a campaign to replace them and I have had contact from two dealers to say so (I sold another BMW recently, and the 1st dealer didn't know I didn't have it anymore).

The part was changed on my GS last week in under an hour while I waited, to say that they are so busy they can't squeeze in an hour to fix your bike is piss poor service!

Eight hour day.

Nine bikes being squeezed in at an hour each = Happiness (of a sorts)

Add a tenth = Misery

It's not the end of the world is it?

(a) All the recall notices are not sent out at once, for fairly obvious logistical reasons.

(b) The recall hadn't been launched in full six weeks ago.

My dealer SBW told me mine isn't one of the bikes that needs doing, its registered June 06? However today whilst changing up from 2nd to 3rd at around 6k revs the bike just cut out completely, no dash lights or anything working. Blank computer screen. Made a quick grab for the ignition key and turned on and off a couple of times and it switched back on with the EWS warning and bulb failure showing, both of which cleared. Is this the EWS problem?

Mine (1200GSA 06) did that once for no apparent reason, about five months ago.

Has never done it before or since.

Just one of those things, I guess.

A bit like my house phone that, yesterday evening, suddenly rings out fine but will not accept incoming calls....life's one long series of mysteries.....

July 2006 1200....Never had EWS problem, not contacted by dealer re recall.

Bike in for 12,000 miles service last Friday, and was told then that my bike was subject to a recall, to have the EWS ring replaced.

All done and dusted, there and then......:)

Now here is a (possibly) interesting thought:

My 1200 is the same vintage, so maybe I will hear that the ring needs doing...maybe not.

The more intreaging question is, will BuMW replace the spare ring that I bought about seven months ago? I can only assume that it might be duff....so they should, I assume, replace it....we shall see....

My dealer here in the US sent an email out to all their customers informing us what bikes need it - they changed mine today. Took about an hour.

EWS...Me Too!

Mine failed today. Sept 07 with 6.5k on the clock. Luckily was 5 mins from work and had just stopped at the local shop to buy some bananas. :)

Pushed the bike the rest of the way and is now recovered to local dealer and have a Mondeo 'Titanium' (with 36 miles on it) as a replacement until bike fixed. :thumb

My previous 04 bike did 30k without ever letting me down (apart from one puncture and another time throwing it into a hedge).

Things ain't what they used to be... :thedummy

My dealer told me to bring mine in ,06 12 gs, to get ews ring,On collection that evening he said they didnt change it cause mine was ok,Has this happened to anyone else?:confused:

The recovery truck mech that picked up PJ's GSA said that his previous call had been a 2007 bike with EWS failure - so at least one more out there

Bought a spare EWS ring just over a month ago just in case my 4 month old, 5500 mile GSA broke down while I was touring France. (after being told by my dealer that there wasn't an issue).

Kept the EWS ring in my tool kit. Took kit out of bike at weekend to do some work around the house. Rode to work this morning. Finished work at 17.30. (bloody early for a change) Bike not starting. EWS light shining bright. Tool kit and EWS ring at home.:spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

BMW assist on their way........

So much so for getting home nice and sharp.

yet another EWS fails

my 08 bike with 3500 miles on
called service assist the guy got me going with a spare he had on the car then i rode to my dealer who replaced the unit in 40 mins

Out of interest, what is the view of the new "247" part? Has it cured the problem? Are there any recorded failures with the new part?
