Hill Start Assist

Hill Start Assist is an option of the 2017 model R1200GS

Does anyone know if this can be retro fitted to 2016 models?

Yes,carry a brick and stick it behind your rear wheel every time you park on a slope !

Welcome to the forum-great first post !!:aidan

Stupid in your opinion clearly. Personally I think it's great and while I would only use it once in a while it's something that would be handy.

Maybe you would be happy to go back to hand cranking engines to start them...

Honestly why do you need hill start I can't believe they are actually putting it on bikes now it bloody crazy.

What's wrong with having it on there? When you are two up will full luggage on a steep incline stopped at lights it would be handy to have.

I don't get these people that are anti progress.

Stop on a slope. Sqeeze front brake extra hard, an H in a circle lights up in the lcd display. Bike is held as long as engine is running. You can select neutral and relax(both feet on the ground, both hands off the bars). To release, move off as normal but extra revs are needed and takes a little practice. You can also release by squeezing front brake again. System also works downhill.

It's a useful extra and I just don't understand all the negativity. Embrace change, if you don't like it sell your GS and get a classic!

I don't get the negativity either and perhaps they would be happier with a steam engined bike lol

The scenario is I'm stopped at sloping traffic lights at the busiest junction in town on my 2017 Rallye. I grab the front brake lever and pull until the hill hold icon is displayed, the brakes are locked on and I now have two hands free do put wherever I want, which is nothing. The lights change to green, I think ok lets just snick it into first and see what happens as the manual says it should auto-release. I increase the revs and slip the clutch to take off as normal but the brakes are still gripping so the revs dip dramatically . Instinct kicks in and I increase the revs to prevent stalling but as I do so the brakes release so I take off with the front wheel pawing the air. I then decide that this isn't good so shut the throttle which results in the bike almost stalling again. I re-apply the throttle and the front wheel comes up again so I shut it again and it comes crashing down again.
One of my most embarrassing motorcycling moments ever
I now grab the front brake again to release the hill hold before taking off. Just like a handbrake on a car really.

You sure that's not just the Rallye's super-duper suspension ?

how do I know if mine has it or not please ?
2017 te model with all the extras

The GSA doesn't have it yet. The 2017 GS does. Give it 4 months, and it'll be standard on the GSA.;)

Anyone that doesn't like it, fuck 'em.:rob:D
