Hill Start Assist is an option of the 2017 model R1200GS
Does anyone know if this can be retro fitted to 2016 models?

Yes,carry a brick and stick it behind your rear wheel every time you park on a slope !

Find a hill.....
Stop on a slope. Sqeeze front brake extra hard, an H in a circle lights up in the lcd display. Bike is held as long as engine is running. You can select neutral and relax(both feet on the ground, both hands off the bars). To release, move off as normal but extra revs are needed and takes a little practice. You can also release by squeezing front brake again. System also works downhill.
It's a useful extra and I just don't understand all the negativity. Embrace change, if you don't like it sell your GS and get a classic!

The scenario is I'm stopped at sloping traffic lights at the busiest junction in town on my 2017 Rallye. I grab the front brake lever and pull until the hill hold icon is displayed, the brakes are locked on and I now have two hands free do put wherever I want, which is nothing. The lights change to green, I think ok lets just snick it into first and see what happens as the manual says it should auto-release. I increase the revs and slip the clutch to take off as normal but the brakes are still gripping so the revs dip dramatically . Instinct kicks in and I increase the revs to prevent stalling but as I do so the brakes release so I take off with the front wheel pawing the air. I then decide that this isn't good so shut the throttle which results in the bike almost stalling again. I re-apply the throttle and the front wheel comes up again so I shut it again and it comes crashing down again.
One of my most embarrassing motorcycling moments ever
I now grab the front brake again to release the hill hold before taking off. Just like a handbrake on a car really.
