Navigator V - Review

Probably not a consideration if you already have the Autocom wired system, but Autocom now also offer a Bluetooth system (Autocom Air) which according to a post elsewhere on UKGSERs is about £329 for two headsets
- looks similar to the Sena stuff, but a very inconspicuous fitting on the helmet

I suggest that you speak to Sam at Chainspeed then (see the link for number), he should be able to advise. This is probably what you need.

Yep - did some reading up this pm and thats the puppy.....another £80....blimey. I think I'll try my old Autocom bluetooth dongle to start off with - its not like I'm looking for perfect acoustics :)

Does the NavV not have a traditional hard wired audio out? I tried my #1273 BT dongle with my Zumo and it wasn't great. However, I already had an isolated stereo lead and used that instead, great for music and directions into my Super Pro Avi. The BT dongle is still connected and used as a dedicated connection to my phone. Autocom isolated stereo leads can be had off eBay for around £20-£25.

The Nav V does NOT have an audio out jack. However, if you have the OEM "GPS prep" harness on your GS LC, the smaller of the two harness connectors will deliver turn by turn directions, and you can wire up your head set to that. It will not deliver phone or mp3 audio through that connector, though.

One thing I have discovered, made useful by the devices quicker processor is its speed to display alternative routes.

Fiddling about here in central London, I asked it to take me to a cafe near Boulogne. The device calculated and displayed a suggested route quickly, very nicely presented in a segmented fashion with a map on one side and basic data on the other.

I then noticed that it had a small option to display an alternative route and another, each to some degree different to the last. I also noticed that you could expand, contract the map segment, enabling you to see where the suggested route(s) took you.

You could then scroll between the three alternative suggestions, until you found the one that suited you best. Then just select it and away you go.

Smartphone Link App Services

I'd be interested to know how the subscription Parking Service works in the UK/EU? In North America (NA) it is provided by an online company, BestParking.com, and only [partner] commercial parking company locations are provided (not the most useful service).

In practice, as you travel along your active route, within ~30sec from your destination you will receive the Parking Alert symbol. If you touch the Alert Icon on the map you will go to the Alerts page then you can proceed to the Parking results page. Again, only commercial partner locations will be given which could be a considerable distance from your destination. Once you reach your destination the Parking Alert icon will disappear after 30sec.

Just noticed that the new maps display major one way streets in a different colour, with some sort of marking on them. Can't see that they indicate the direction of the one way flow.

I think the Oneway Streets have had arrows indicating direction for some time now--but they are very small and you have to be at almost max-zoom to see them.

-1 for BMW Nav 5 - missing external speaker, which makes Alarm clock app useless, unless you sleep in your helmet on and comms on as well. Other than that - +1

Can't you use your phone for that :augie

that was just example that alarm clock app has no use on V but was working on IV. as it is now, you can't use nav V in car without buying BMW mount with speaker which adds additional cost to already pricey piece of kit.

I always thought that was kind of funny...a Silent Alarm.

Nav V will not Bluetooth music to my 2 yr old Scalar Rider Teamset cos it needs a newer stereo A2DP headset

I had never thought of buying a GPS device for it's 'Wake up and get up' qualities. I have though decided not to start.

It's worth checking if there is a firmware upgrade for your headset. I know Sena released one recently that now allows it to be used with other makes for example.:thumb2

Is it just me or is it illogical that when you want to load a route you've pre-sent to the unit, you don't press 'Where To?' but have to go into Apps? That confuses me every time!:blast

Me, I am confused at the difference between "routes" and "trips": I create a route in Basecamp; transfer it to the Nav V; and it sits in Trip Planner.

Is there a subtle difference that I am missing, or are the terms interchangeable?
