Replacement forks

Hey Snoopy!

For somebody who really seems to dislike HP2s... you seem to spend an awful lot of time here :nenau

Is there something you are afraid to admit?? :nenau

Why would I dislike them?..., nowt wrong with them, obviously. :D :augie

What would you like me to admit too? Taking the micky out of daft people accepting an untested product because they want POWWWWER!!

Or people going up Moroccan passes at 100mph screaming POWWEEEER!!?

You HP2 owners might have all the POOOWWER, but you ain't going anywhere far. :D

You spend £10k+ on a cut down bike which costs more than the original and they couldn't even get the forks right!

I and every KTM owner, think it's funny, and I'll continue to fish, thanks. :P

How's the metalic noise from your engine - sprockets/DRZ/nut/dump oil; never heard of that happening to a DRZ before :mmmm :augie:thumb

For me it's not so much what is wrong with them (every bike has something wrong them - look at how much you've customised yours...) but more: what is right with them. For me, the HP2 is very flexible - it can commute, make the long ride, and still be really managable, and fun, on the dirt. After partying till 3 am Sat night, getting a few hours kip in a tent - there is no way I would've wanted to ride a round trip of 180 miles on road and 60 miles off-road in the middle on a 400cc bike. But the HP2 worked for me yesterday - and it cleared my hangover :augie You may well be made of sterner stuff than me and completing such a ride on your DR would prove your toughness to all those around you. Maybe when I grow up, I too can have a DR :P

I could spend all my time bitching about what is wrong with my bike... or spend all my time criticising other peoples bikes - which is easy, if not totally pointless. The reality is - I spent a few days with DR with Redtread and I thought it was a great bike. To be honest, I think most bikes are great :clap So if some guy wants to spend 10+ grand on a bike and it makes them happy - more power to them.

Get out there, ride, and, as my American friends would say, try supping the kool-aid :thumb2

not bragging

but i`ve owned over 200 bikes, none being a SUZUKI DRZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

nuf said.:D

The metallic noise continues, I can't pin it down :D, but all the problems I've had have been my own fault. I actually like the HP2, I just wouldn't buy one for the very simple reason that I would not pay a small fortune for something that is crappy made. I don't know why anyone would. :nenau

Nick, based on past indications if you were to get one, chances are you'd sell it before your first ride. ;):P

Fingers crossed it's not serious then :thumb2

It wasn't your fault though (as such) - it's a known problem on DRZ's. That's all I was saying - nothing is perfect in this world.

HP2

I pick up a second hand HP2 on wednesday march 2007 model 2000 miles on it buying from a BMW dealer, will I need to check the forks straight away ?
Is there a good replacement or improvment so that it's not an on going problem

The sprocket nut issue is because people don't (or forget) to bend the flaps of the large washer over the nut. The nut being loose doesn't make any difference if these flaps are over it. It's not a problem until the dumb rider begins changing the sprocket!

Or were you talking about the metallic noise? Nothing appears loose, so I expect the engine to blow up on the next outing.

Anyhow I didn't want to hijack the thread just mix it a little ;), so back to the original topic.

I think it's been established that the HP2s forks need to be monitored at fairly frequent intervals. Some have had them fail in under 1000 miles, and I'm sure there are owners with the same forks from new (haven't checked for play yet :D).

I've not heard of an easy replacement yet (straight swap). Some owners have had the internals modded but these improvements are as yet unproven long term. Just be thankful that BMW seem to be happy replacing worn forks (although not going as far as to admit there's a problem).

BTW - you'll love it!
See you on the trails sometime..........(Princetown next weekend?)

They HP2 is a great bike apart from the shite forks. I can't fault the bike in any other department, well suppose I could, but no more than I would an 1150 or 1200!

I've come to the conclusion that BMW just don't appear to spend enough time in testing out their products sufficiently, I could be wrong...:nenau

As for DRZ's, well I'm a big fan of Suzuki, but to be honest my farts have more 'poke' than a DRZ. That said, it's reliable and still a great beginners bike!

....truth be told - when you you own a factory bike you've got to be prepared for mechanical failure and don't worry mate you're safe on your DR - you sound like the type of person who'll never be bothered by things they don't understand. I know this because I happen to own the DR650 which inspired the bored down woolly woofter DR 350 & 400. Although the DR650 is far more powerful than both of those two lightweight versions, I know from experience that DR's go no where fast ( although it seems you don't and never will ). Simple things for simple folk I 'spose, so you're doing fine :thumb2

If you get the time take a look at the off road results for the HP2. I'm sure you will find it wipes the floor. Although the way you see things you I hope there are lots of pictures to help you along :tosser

I must be a carp but I bet you a hundred quid I arrive on my HP2 before you do on your DR. Jealous Pussy :shotim

Only if you carry a spare rear drive assembly, forks and a bloody big toolbox.

:P

Sod it - you've tempted me. I'll take my chances on my dodgy HP2.

I challenge you. My unreliable slow HP2 up against your World beating "Adventurised" DR.

I'm serious - I really really fancy my chances against your uber reliable DR.

REALLY REALLY REALLY.

I hope you're not CHICKEN? pakor pakor :boobies

Off-road OR road. Your choice.

You shouldn't tempt me to a challenge. :D

Here's my thoughts:

Any off-road you want, of any level.
Route must include highways with 4hrs non-stop travelling (other than for fills).
No back-up vans or cars of any type. What you bring you carry.
Serious mud and/or bog type conditions.

Let's start a new thread - the challenge is on!

What exactly are you trying to say Snoopy?

Are you trying to say that your DRZ is the best adventure bike? The best enduro bike? What is it that makes your bike so much better for the real world???

Yes, if you are going solo, through Africa, South America and the Road of Bones, and have all the time in the world, and are prepared to travel very light - then I'm sure the DRZ is a pretty capable bike.

Most of us mere mortals have other considerations that influence our decision. And yes, the problem with forks is a big issue and I'm amazed that BM haven't fixed it... but there is so much else on the bike that makes it awesome that is pretty hard to change on a regular 12gs: the airshock, lighter engine, stiffer and narrower chassis, 21" front wheel, longer rear swing arm. And the fact that it already has regular forks means upgrading to other forks would be a much simpler job (rather than having to put a new front end on).

And besides - if your DRZ is the ultimate bike... what the fcuk are you doing spending all this time in the HP2 section on a GS site?!?!? Haven't you got some DRZ friends to go play with?

I'll ride along side the pair of you and film it, on my HP sauce of course...:thumb

The Aussie out-back or the canyons of Colorado, my money would be on the HP!

But let's get real, a shitty welsh forest with some deep water, rutted tracks, technical single track and some steep wet climbs/descents and my money is on the DR.

On the other hand, if the DR is carrying a lot of extra kit and a shit rider, I'll probably go with the HP. Unfortunately for the HP, tyre size is a problem and all that power is sadly lost...:(

Fork up-date

Left it all day at the dealer yesterday to have the bushes replaced.

When I returned at 5.00pm it hadn't been done. I was told that they were pretty bad, the nitride coating had worn badly from the sliders. The technician refused to change the bushes and demanded BM replace the complete legs. BM have agreed, the bike will go back in about 2 weeks.

Dan (franchise owner) told me that he has a feeling a new pair of forks is on the horizon...:nenau

We all need to stand fast with this bollox with the forks and harrass the dealers about getting this rediculous problem resolved.

I'm with Vern, on believing that probably all the HP's out there have shagged forks! So get those bikes back to your dealer ASAP and whinge like feck!
