Replacement forks

So I notice that every familiar shiny look from my front forks after washing it recently and decide as the bike is going in for the 12k service to mention that they might be knackered. Father in law took the bike in as I was at work and he showed them the wear on the front forks.

So guess what actually caused the wear on my front forks according to the young lad with all the experience in the workshop - I am riding with the wrong tyre pressures therefor my front forks are wearing rapidly :eek:eek Well this is strange as I have been riding all my bikes over the years at the same pressure i.e. 36-38 psi and never before had any problems. Get on the phone and ask to speak to the service manager and he is busy with a client but will call back.

Couple of hours later no response so I call them again. He is quite amazed that the HP2 has any problems with the front forks and think that is normal wear. I say no if you take the front wheel off you might find there is a interesting click click sound which certainly is not fekin normal at 12000 miles not even riding off road!!

Even more so surprised when I told him I can off the top of my head name at least 6 people with HP2's who had their front forks replaced under warranty before 6000 miles. He will now check into it and call me back.....still waiting  My bike is still under warranty and what is the best way to approach these guys to get it replaced as they promised when they sold the bike with warranty to me originally. Why should I now beg and plead for them to replace the forks if it is a known fault. Makes me really pissed off as besides the dealers lack of support it still is one of the greatest bikes I have ever owned.

Guess will now definitely opt for the extended warranty if this is already the case. It does seem as if the supermoto wheels accelarated the wear on the forks the last 6k miles though :nenau

Will keep you posted....

Mine is in for a service with around 5k on the clock and they are replacing both wheels and the forks, I had expected just the fork lowers but I called last week and they told me they were waiting for new fork uppers as well as they had some corrosion on them.

I will not be taking out the extended warranty as I am not totally convinced I will keep the bike much longer (As much as I love it I can think of other even more fun things that are equally not mainstream)

If you're taking bike into dealer for a warranty claim it might be a good idea to wash off several kgs of Salisbury plain mud off it first. :D

Ahhh that's where I went wrong then :D To be honest Sid I have only used this bike offroad once last year doing some very light greenlaning. It was not used over the winter and been fitted with super motard wheels for commuting the last 6k miles. Sadly I think it lasted longer than what they would off had I been doing offroading with it as well.

This is what really gets me is the fact that the bike is being treated very very well/lightly in relation to other HP2's on here yet they come up with these pathetic excuses to get out of the warranty issues.

Ovenpaa that is one thing I can really say have not crossed my mind one second since buying this bike. It has been years since I had a bike where it just makes me smile every single time I get on it regardless the issues. If I had to replace this bike today with something else it would be another HP2 for sure :thumb2

I think your dealer might be a bit more helpful after they've spoken to BMW.
It is a known issue. BMW know the forks are shite.

Unfortunately for us the HP isn't an on going model, so BMs usual method of denying any problem exists but then redesigning faulty parts on later models aint going to happen.

If you do have problems getting replacement forks (even after warranty has run out) I think there must be enough evidence out there to prove there's a problem, and could be approached from another angle? (any friendly solicitors out there?)

My warranty has now run out. I'll have to see what happens in another 6000 miles :augie

hp2 forks

I have just bought my hp2 , second hand , 8500 km , on the clock .
looks good , rides nicely , but..........
the whole suspension is simply ridiculos
the front forks have been changed with a full marzocchi set.
rear of course ohlins .
the bike now is much better .
especcially on the rear .

after running for aprox 3000 km in a month , I noticed a abnormal wear from the superficial coating of the forks .
plus there is some movment , back and forward , aprox 1 mm .
riding the bike on un even road you hear always a clunk at every hole .
i can't immagine in off road .
after spending so much money for a bike of this level , the minimun is to pretend a decent fork , and rear suspension .
my bike has expired the garantee since aprox 4 months , and i belive the repair is rather costy .

ps. a friend of mine , which is a dealer of after markets components , says that the stock marzocchi fork fit on the hp2 has an industrial cost of 127 euro each !!!
i start to belive that the bmw enginers have saved on each penny , but the marketing boys have made a good earning for the company .

Well my HP2 is now out of Warranty and as I never had it transferred over from the previous owner I never got a renewal invitation so I hope they are okay. So far I have about 5500miles on the closk and have taken it off road quite a bit including the Cambrian Rally last year and so far everything seems fine and Dandy. (Thats the kiss of death if ever there was one).

I have a Ohlin on the back and if these forks play up will swap for something nice rather than the same although they work fine for me:thumb2

It's going to Tipp in 2 weeks so I'll give it a shake up there:augie

Forks, drive arms etc etc etc etc etc and now the engine.

The faults are recurring.

Do BwM ever read this forum? Maybe we should all jus write the address on a piece of paper and post it to them?

Then they may realise we all talk!

I must admitt it is becoming a bit of a joke with all these rediculous problems!

I think my forks are probably shagged again, it really doesn't handle that well, and at times I feel like I'm wrestling it through the corners at speed!

Why can't the Japs give us something like the 'sauce', only feckin reliable and half it's price...

Is the SE950 really any worse? It's certainly a lot cheaper!

Never spoken to anyone who's had one long enough or that's done any real mileage!

Maybe I've just answered my own question...?

Maybe I've just been really lucky... but the Dr Shox treatment seems to work and take care of the forks. I've now done around 17,000 miles on the bike including commuting, two up touring and plenty of off-road abuse. I was lucky that the previous owner had already done it on mine, but I would def paid the 3/400 pounds Dr Shox asks.

I know what ya saying Mav, but that ain't the point. We're talking about a feckin 12.5k bike with about the shittiest forks on the planet. It's so blantantly obvious that the forks are shit. They should just recall the bikes and fit some quality forks to 'em!

It really is that simple!

As much as it pains me to agree with you ( :P ) you're right, they should fix the forks.

However, I don't think that's going to happen and I love the bike so I'm left with dealing with the slightly annoying issues so that I can continue to enjoy the bike

UNBELIEVEABLE!!! My First post...Fork Clunk of course!

Hello All,

Just picked up a leftover HP2. I have all of 146 road only miles on the thing and noticed the noise right away. :spitfire

I haven't done the fork leg jiggle yet, but I am positive what the outcome will be. Me going into the dealer like this...:mcgun:mcgun:mcgun

I now miss my 1150 Adventure that I traded on this thing!

Cheers and thanks for all of the info!

Hello Jason
No offence but,
-146 road miles only and you noticed this specific noise and no other one?:duno
-You're positive what the jiggle test outcome will be before you run it?:duno
-You now miss your 1150 Adv that you traded on THIS THING?:eek
:mmmm The idea is clear. You're not for the HP2 and the HP2 is not for you.Trade it back with a 1150 ADV and be happy as we :hapybnce: with the HP2.Easy fix.
Best wishes.

Sorry... allow me to clarify

Addy,

No offense taken. I meant that I missed the tank like reliability of the 1150ADV. I had 25k on it, with not one issue.

My first 140 miles was city riding with the SM wheel kit. I immediately heard the clunk upon leaving the dealers lot. Thought nothing of it. Rode around town...(VERY rough Cobblestone streets)...clunk, clunk, clunk. No other way to describe it. Pulled in clutch to coast over the bumps and the noise is absolutely coming from the fork.

I have since ridden another 150 miles with even a few laps at Roebling Road. The bike is insane! I love it. No way I would trade it back for my 1150...My forks were not touched as far as the adjusters and it was waaaaaaay too soft. Rolled into the pits to make some adjustments, off the tarmac and onto the grass where I was staged and what do I hear?... clunk.

If that's not the fork, what else could it be? Looking for the infinite wisdom of all HP owners!

Also, until I replace the airshock with a real boinger, Is it ok to fill it with a compressor? That hand pump sucks!

Cheers,

Jason

My headstock bearings had loosened off after 150 miles resulting in a slight clunk - it may be worth checking on yours, I would be very surprised if the fork bushes had failed so early.
