All I want to do is update my maps and be able to use them without plugging the Zumo in everytime.

I have finally got the 660 registered in my name and last night registered my lifetime maps.

Great, 2013 maps available, it won't download as the unit hasn't got enough memory. No issue, download to computer and then I'll install the regions I want from there.

Set to download overnight and away to bed I go. This morning it says it's downloaded, but I can't find the new map files!! Plug in my 660 and it says it is running the upto date maps (but is showing 2010 map on basecamp!).

Feckin thing is so complicated!

Basecamp itself seems fairly familiar for what I want to do with it, but I want to have the maps on my computer aswell as the zumo.

I've paid my money, bought the maps, and I still can't get the fecking thing to work.

Whilst the 660 is a good unit, I think they have made things too complicated compared to the old 2610, yet at the same time they have lost one of the best features which was the old slider system that you could use to route on minor roads. Fastest/Shortest route just doesn't give you the same degree of customisation to your routing "on the fly"

Any ideas how to make this work the way I want it. I've read the other threads, but it's all gobbledy gook

Just buy another 2610... or if you want the NT mapping, get a 2820.

Plenty of people on here will buy your 660...

This obsessive updating of maps... No one worried that their Michelin map was 5 years old?

I've found it easier to download whatever to the PC, then go back in and download to the 660. Unless you're going very far, Western Europe still fits on the 660, and mapinstall will add any other bits needed onto the 660.

I just know there'll be there 101 steps to add the maps comment coming along soon where you rename / move files / delete files / rename them etc etc.

That would be great if I could get the fecking things to download to the computer John. It keeps kicking it back (but only after 5-7 hours of downloading).

For added kicks, try updating three machines which is a nice waste of bandwidth.

So, it turns into a game of: install on one machine, find the *.gmap file, then copy to other machines and import the map file instead.

All because Garmin who blame NavTeq have no idea what 'incremental' means.

With Basecamp open do you have a drop down menu with the mapping products visible near the top of the screen amongst the menu buttons?

You should be able to see, and select, the new mapping in this menu.

If the drop down list isn't visible right click the menu bar and tick 'Map Products'.

There is a way to get all of Europe onto a Zumo 660, see my post on the City Nav 2013.30 Europe mapping is here thread. It looks more complex than it really is.

Updating your mapping by using MapInstall or Mapsource to send the data from your PC to your Zumo will result in the Junction View files not being loaded. Maybe this feature isn't important to you though.

If you don't want Junction View or 3D buildings then you can delete these files from your Zumo to free up more than a GB of space. That way you'll have no problems fitting all of Europe onto it for a few years to come. The old ones left on your device wont work with the updated mapping anyway. Files are /Garmin/GMAP3D.IMG and /Garmin/JCV/****.JCV respectively. **** will, IIRC, be some random alpha/numerical value.

But think of all the fun you're missing; messing around with computers and stopping to scratch your head when it all goes tits up to the great amusement of your mates...

Seriously, I get your point. Reading maps and compasses are a great skill to have and I strongly believe in maintaining and practising those skills. However, on bike GPS done properly is a great and stress free way to get around an unfamiliar route, city, country etc. I'll always pack maps when on tour, as well as a properly programmed GPS, as they're far better for a greater overview of what's around you and a great aid to planning. With a GPS you don't need to stop at the side of the road to check or refold, the information in your immediate vicinity is there in front of you with very little distraction from the road ahead. Upcoming turns are announced into your helmet without you having to take your eyes off the road. Need to find a hotel in a large city with a myriad of one way systems when it's dark and raining? I know what method I'd choose.

At the end of the day it's a personal choice though. You'll be fine when the satellites fall out of the sky

yeah I know. I have my galaxy tab with CoPilot on it, I have been known to stick that in my tank bag on the odd occasion - and I tend to use it all the time for business journeys in the car.

BUT just saying I need to head NNE for about 30 miles then head S is quite good fun - I've ended up in some weird and wonderful places I would never have seen.

obviously for the slog. motorway munching is just a list of road numbers and place names. The last couple o miles might see a reference to the sat nav.

If your mapping was properly installed then it should appear there. If you can't see that menu then right click the menu bar and select 'Map Products' to show it.

I'm referring to the 3D buildings gimmick/eye candy that has been included with recent Garmin GPSs and is now included in the mapping updates (if done direct to the unit). Not the 3D mapping on the GPS or within Basecamp. The 3D buildings file is located in the internal memory of your Zumo 660. Connect it to the PC and look in /Garmin/ folder, the file is named GMAP3D.IMG and can be deleted if you don't want this feature. This will save you about 500MB of space that could be used by mapping.

To install the Mapping onto your Zumo from your computer you'll need to install a separate program from Garmin. This is called MapInstall, get it here for PC and here for Mac. You will then need to select the regions that you require, you do this tile by tile, each country is made of multiple tiles, before sending them to your Zumo. Make sure that you select all tiles for a country, some city tiles are very small and not visible without zooming in. You can select larger areas, comprising of many tiles, by clicking and dragging.

Please ensure that you have cleared out the existing mapping files before uploading new mapping to your Zumo, otherwise there won't be enough space. If you're being cautious you can copy this to your PC before deleting. If using a Mac ensure that you empty your trash otherwise the space will still be occupied. The files you should be removing from the /Garmin/ folder on your Zumo will be called GMAPPROM.IMG and/or GMAPSUPP.IMG. There will probably be other files with the same name bit a different extension, you need to remove these as well.

The mapping on your PC should be fully unlocked to your Zumo if it was connected via USB as instructed during the mapping download from the Garmin servers. If it wasn't then you might need to unlock it in Basecamp first. Traditionally with Mapsource there were two types of unlock, one that allowed use on the PC and a further one that allowed use on the GPS itself. I'm not sure that things have changed what with Basecamp and downloaded mapping (as opposed to the old updates on DVD).

Alternatively use OpenStreetMap mapping.

I just spent 3 weeks in Florida and this got us around in the hire car very well indeed using my Nuvi 765. There was one glitch with the mapping data for a specific point where it seemed to dump the remainder of the route to a straight line (on 528 Toll - Beachline Expressway, on the way to Cape Canaveral). Otherwise it performed really well with pre programmed destinations, custom and built in POIs (pretty extensive). Street numbers it was a little lacking on. But it was free and the road network coverage was comprehensive and up to date.

See, now I'm stumbling at the first block because all that is showing in either is the old 2010 mapping on the zumo, or the global map.

I think you need to re-download the mapping. Go through the options it offers methodically. This can all be dealt with in the first few screens, once it's got that over with the download itself can be left to it's own devices, i.e. overnight. Ensure that you don't have any power saving options enabled (screen blacking out is OK) that will interrupt the process.

What operating system are you using?
