Heated grips - working or not working ?

with regards to heated grips, I would like to know if there is any way that the output to the electrical elements be increased (In plain language i want em 'otter innit, lol) Mine dont see to suffer the problems where they take aeons to warm up, mine are warm less than 2 minutes after i have started the motor... IF anyone can help me then send me a PM, as Icant get access to all of this forum on my mobile at work during the day, only PM's appear in their entirety. Ohter than that I'll have to stop being so bloody impatient and wait till i get home, regards all Mark

Phoned Rainbow this morning, said heated grips are still crap, yes we know and so does BMW, its because handlebars are aluminium and they dont know what to do about it.

So after 10 years of producing the RS with aluminium handlebars, which had crap heated grips, they have gone and done it again:  :blast

My first set of heated grips (07 ADV) would come up to temperature and then go cold. The replacement set (warranty) remain at temperature, but could be warmer.

I almost always ride wearing summer weight gloves.

I'm getting spoilers for the hand guards.

But ... does anyone know if the thermostat can be adjusted to make the grips warmer at each setting?

It would mean a software update. If there is one available, I think your the first one to mention heated grips arn't warm enough on 07 bike.

Heated grips

Just got my bike back from having the brake pipes changed, following the recall.
I did mention that the heated grips were very intermittent.
SBW checked the grips out and found that they were working but at a very low temperature. They did a software update and the grips are now toasty warm.
I just hope they stay that way.

E mailed BMW service department last Monday about heated grips. My reference/case number is 171,985 (wow). Technical department in Germany are aware and trying to find a solution.

Unoffically, they are know as "warm weather grips" i.e. they work when its warm weather and dont when its cold weather. Now some people could determine this as intermitent:blast

I've had the same problem for the past 10 months on my '08 GS. Dealer at first replaced the switch, that didn't fix it so they replaced the grips for new ones. This seemed to fix it for a while then coming into this winter again they were failing. So I just had the bike in for the brake pipe recall and the dealer switched my ZFE computer with the salesman's identical '08 GS to see if that was the problem with the grips. Lo and behold I now have great working toasty grips whilst my salesman is riding around in freezing weather without heated grips. :) Last night it was snowing and my salesman has a 1hr ride home :augie and this morning when I spoke to them they told me they have ordered me a new ZFE computer to replace my old one, which is currently in the salesmans bike. He wants his computer back pretty damn quick I can tell you!!!

So hopefully this will finally fix my heated grips for good.

Cheers,
Delirious.

What's a ZFE computer?

This is the electronics box that contols the "Central Vehicle Electronics" ie lights , indicators, heated grips etc. There is another ECU that controls the engine. They are connected together with a pair of wires called the CAN bus, along with the Instrument Cluster and the ABS unit (if fitted).

Many people will comment that the accessory socket is controlled by the CAN bus - not so; it is contolled by the ZFE unit. The "Electronic Fuses" are also in the ZFE box. :thumb2
